The Researchers and Nonprofit Committee (RaN) was formed in 1999 by the Michigan Public Policy Initiative's Advisory Committee. The overarching goal of the group is to influence public policy by bridging the communication gap between nonprofits and researchers to develop viable research on the sector. The group meets twice a year to discuss the various issues surrounding research about the sector. There are approximately 25 committee members representing various universities, foundations and nonprofit organizations. Through the discussions, committee members have conveyed a need for resources to locate relevant research for the sector, to distill the information into a readable format and to disseminate it to nonprofits and policymakers. The Spotlight on Applied Research Series was developed to meet the needs identified by the committee. Currently, Michigan State University and Wayne State University faculty work with graduate students to develop these short briefs that summarize research relevant to the sector. MPPI then works with the RaN Committee to disseminate the publication. The Spotlight series is available on the this Web site under publications.
